A British artillery barrage opened up at 4.15 pm and a quarter of an hour later, three companies of 2nd Devonshire advanced against the Moated Grange. The left company got hung up on the wire and suffered heavily, the centre one captured 150 yards of German trench but the right company never advanced at all.  In the evening they were relieved by 2nd West Yorkshire.
